ARCH1202 S2 2008 - Exercise 1 - Concept Model

Based on a low-slung beach pavilion, the concept model engages the misalignment of the urban grid to the northerly axis, and creates a dialogue between the site and its context by reopening access into and around the community centre. Materiality is envisioned as referencing the character of the area, as well as traditional beach pavilion materials, and re-applied in a contemporary context.

Coogee Beach: Drawn in to the oval and site by the configuration of the urban voids

Bordering cliffs to Coogee Bay: a characteristic element of the Sydney shoreline

Characteristic materiality in the area: Coogee's early 20th century social expansion means there is a large number of heritage listed buildings in the area. The materiality and construction of these informs the character of the area. Sandstone masonry, brickwork, and timber latticework figure prominently, and inform a style of Post-Edwardian 'beachhouse'
