Influences on the Project #2

Continuing with the monkish asceticism of the life of the scholar, I was reminded of the work of a minimalist architect whose work, which often reflects the ascetic, I admire; John Pawson. (http://www.johnpawson.com)

In particular, and with relation to this project, I was reminded of his design of a Cistercian Monastery at Novy Dvur in the Czech Republic, completed in 2004. It is based around an ordered lifestyle of asceticism, and follows an architectural ideal put forward by St. Bernard in the 12th century; an emphasis on the quality of light and proportion, and simple detailing and facades.

This particular project's approach to form, as well as John Pawson's personal approach to material, helped inform the project's resolution.
