Based on a low-slung beach pavilion, the concept model engages the misalignment of the urban grid to the northerly axis, and creates a dialogue between the site and its context by reopening access into and around the community centre. Materiality is envisioned as referencing the character of the area, as well as traditional beach pavilion materials, and re-applied in a contemporary context.

ARCH1202 S2 2008 - Exercise 1 - Area Photography
Characteristic materiality in the area: Coogee's early 20th century social expansion means there is a large number of heritage listed buildings in the area. The materiality and construction of these informs the character of the area. Sandstone masonry, brickwork, and timber latticework figure prominently, and inform a style of Post-Edwardian 'beachhouse'
ARCH1202 S2 2008 - Exercise 1 - Site Analysis
SITE
RECIPROCITY
Alignment of structures on site, terrain contours, and a grid based on the north point
THRESHOLD
Relationship of built structure to open space and access
THRESHOLD
Potential for reopening and allowing through-access to alignment of site, and responding to the playing field with the configuration of the community centre
North-South section through oval, revealing structural placement in the present site and its relationship to the bordering urban blocks
East-West Section through site, revealing relation of neigbouring urban blocks to the oval

RECIPROCITY
'Natural Amphitheatre' formed on site by surrounding landscape
RECIPROCITY
Views and direction of movement and 'flow' through the landscape
MATERIALITY
The close proximity of heritage listed structures to the site, creating a particular character of materiality
